Crawl under your car on the front drivers side. Follow the lower radiator hose from the radiator to the motor. The thing that the hose is clamped to is the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing bolts to the bottom of the water pump. The water pump is driven by the timing belt.

1989 subaru legacy gets hot but the radiator does not What is wrong?

It sounds like your water pump is not circulating the water or the thermostat is stuck closed. The water pump and thermostat are at the front bottom of the engine attached to the bottom radiator hose. You may have a blockage, but that is less likely. To test the thermostat after you have removed it, drop it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens.

What does it mean when water is jetting out of the back of the water pump on a 1991 Subaru Legacy is this a pressure release system does it mean the thermostat is failing?

It means that the gasket seal on the water pump is bad and you need to replace it before you drive the vehicle.

How do you replace the thermostat located on a 1994 Subaru Legacy 4WD?

the thermostat is located under the car just follow the big lower radiator hose to the motor and its right there True-- thermostat is located inside the engine part (water pump) where the lower hose attaches to the engine. Be careful with the bolts, use penetrating oil, you do not want to break one. Try to use a Subaru thermostat and gasket-- expensive, but cheaper than an overheated engine, most places do not stock the required thermostat, being an oddball temperatiue (167F), putting in a "regular 195F" thermostat WILL cook your engine. The gasket is really an O-ring affair-- it works nicely. Try not to re-use the old O ring gasket.
