On a 1997 Mazda 626 2.5L v-6, it is at the engine end of the lower radiator hose, inside the aluminum housing mounted to the engine with two 12 mm bolts. Also there is a support bracket attached to the rear of the head, which must be removed, ( one 12mm bolt). It is best accessed by removing the air filter housing ( three bolts, some electrical plugs, vacuum lines, and lg. air intake hoses.) after this is done you can see and get to it easily.

The thermostat housing on the 1998 Mazda 626 6 cylinder is located underneath the air filter housing. You need to remove this air filter housing to get to the thermostat housing. There's two (2) bolts the left connecting the thermostat housing to the motor and another two (2) bolts facing the steering wheel connecting it to the engine. This is where the thermostat is housed.
