There is no dip stick in the 1997 (electronic) Mercedes transmission. The tranny is sealed with syntetic fluid and it is the first year of the new electronic transmission. MB does not want anyone to "play" with it. Only a MB dealer can check the level, most likely with a laptop computer. The only thing anyone else can do is slowly remove the drain plug to collect a small sample and observe the quality ( color/smell) of the fluid. Been there, mine was black and nasty: cost $2700 to overhaul.
