start with dist cap and rotor
The firing order on all Chevrolet engines is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. 1,3,5,7 are the left bank and 2,4,6,8 is the right bank and the distributor turns clockwise.
that should have the HEI distributor so the plugs should be set at .045

1 - 3 - 4 - 2 The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE
it says right on the cap "1" but if it does not then it is directly above the rotor. if that doesn't help then it is the closest, straight to the radiator
The distributor cap order for a Chevy 283 varies depending on the year of the motor. A 1975 to 1991 has the number one cylinder at the top just to the left of center. The 1967 to 1974 distributor has the number one cylinder at the top just to the right of center. The firing order is 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2.
