The dot on crank gear should be stright up at 12oclock.
Cam gear dot stright down at 6 oclock. Both dots should be stright over top of each other.

There are two timing marks on a 350 chev one for the cam shaft gear and one for the crank gear. The timing mark on the crank or the on on the bottom of the motor should be facing straight up and the cam shaft gear should be facing straight down this will put you lined up and top dead center.
The crank gear dot should be at 12 o'clock stright up when #1 pistion is all the way to the top of the cylinder. The cam gear dot should be at 6 o'clock stright over top of the crank gear dot. Then put it back together.
Timing marks are on the top of the timing gear rear cover. With the cover off, these marks will line up with the timing marks on the intake and exhaust gears when the crankshaft gear timing mark faces down to its mark at the bottom. Good luck!
the mark on the camshaft timing gear needs to line up with the mark on the crankshaft timing gear to ensure the camshaft is in proper time with the crankshaft. Keep in mind that the marks will only line-up every other revolution of the engine due to the crankshaft spinning twice as fast as the camshaft.
