The reign of Queen Mary (1553-58) was marked by religious upheaval and dissension. She had been raised as a Catholic, and she sought to undo the Protestant changes of the past several years. Protestants were suppressed and burned in the hundreds, an act which earned Mary the charming nickname "Bloody Mary". It is estimated that 800 people were forced into exile, and 300 refused to leave England and were executed publicly. Mary, Queen of Scots was born on 8th December 1542, became Queen when her father died on 14th December 1542 (yes, she was just six days old) and reigned until her execution on 24th July 1567 for allegedly plotting to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I of England. Bloody Mary was Elizabeth I's older sister. She was born on 18th February 1516, became Queen of England on 19th July 1553 and reigned until her death on 17th November 1558. She was called Bloody Mary because during her reign nearly 300 so-called heretics were executed for failing to follow Roman Catholicism.
