Mexico City, Mexico, March 18, 2009.

A woman in Mexico City was the first to have been diagnosed with a previously unknown flu virus. From there the disease was tracked back to a small village in southern Mexico called La Gloria where it is believed that the first cases developed.

The first known person to have contracted the 2009 H1N1 Influenza was a young boy named Edgar Hernandez in La Gloria. He survived the virus.

The 2009 pandemic of Influenza A, Novel H1N1 "Swine Flu" was first detected in Mexico City and was made public March 18, 2009. This new strain of virus has been tracked back to the above named child who was in close proximity to hog farms in the area and was likely the first individual infected.

The village, La Gloria, has about 3,000 people, and it is now believed the first human cases of the Novel H1N1 Influenza probably started and spread from there.
