Turkey was formerly called Asia Minor. The foundation for the incorrect titling of the "Middle East" and "Asia Minor" lies with Great Britain. Britain, colonized and explored much of the world prior to the 20th century (including North America); and measured any distances using GREAT BRITAIN as the anchoring point. Example: Turkey was on the border of Europe and Asia as measured from Great Britain, therefore Turkey was "partly Asian"...or "Asia in a minor way", ASIA MINOR. The currently called "Middle East" was between ASIA MINOR and Southeast Asia (Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, etc.), therefore Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, etc. are the MIDDLE EAST; as measured from the British Empire. East translates to the Orient, as West translates to Occident. The current Middle East is SOUTHWEST ASIA (US Military Medals reflect this); Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, etc. are correctly called SOUTHEAST ASIA; Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India would be correctly called the MIDDLE EAST. ______________________________________________________________________________________ The capital of the Hittite empire currently is within the borders of Turkey in the region of Anatolia. The city was found in the vicinity of the village of Bogazkoy in 1893-94 by Ernest Chantre and it was placed timewise in the Bronze Age.
