Contrary to one would most often believe, drums were more than likely not invented in Africa, but in the Middle East, in Mesopotamia or modern-day Iraq. The oldest drums to ever be discovered were found in Iraq, dating back to 3000 BC. In the same general area, there are carvings that depict drums and date back to about 6000 BC.

∙ 12y agoAs we don't have any remain from prehistoric drums , we can only guess what was the very first type of drums used by human beings.
A drum has to be constituted by a hollow body covered or not by something like a skin ( mammals , fish ). A natural hollow body can be a bamboo or a hollow log from a dead tree. The percussion has certainly been used for hunting and/or shamanistic purposes.

∙ 11y agoActually, it is unknown when the first drum was made, or what it was. Drums go all the way back to 2500 B.C. in Sri Lanka. There were even drums in Mesopotamia in 3000 B.C. However, drums go all the way back to 6000 B.C.
