Henry VIII married Catherine of Aragon in 1509 when he became king. Catherine was the widow of Henry's older brother Arthur (1486 - 1502), who had died at 15 years old. When Henry's marriage to Catherine began to fail and he had fallen in love with Anne Boleyn, Henry used the fact that Catherine had been his brother's wife, as a religious excuse for their failure to have a male heir.
