With the conquering of the city 29 May 1453 by Mehmed II, the Ottoman Empire. However, "much" could not be used to describe the land they controlled in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Aside from the Balkan Peninsula and central Hungary, they had no other control of Europe. They owned a fair portion of Asia Minor and most of the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula, but did not extend control to Iran or elsewhere in Asia. They also held only the northern coast of Africa, the Nile valley and parts of Eritrea in Africa, not even close to the majority of Africa.

They held Constantinople/Istanbul until the dissolution of the sultanate 1 November 1922.
