In the Compromise of 1877, Congress chose Rutherford B. Hayes to be President on the promise that he could bring an end to Reconstruction in the South. The Democrats were outraged, but powerless to change the outcome.
Many historians believe the Hayes presidency struck a blow against civil rights, and ultimately lead to racial segregation during the Jim Crow era.
