It kills the sea birds. If the oil gets into the feathers, it damages their waterproofing, meaning the bird gets waterlogged, very cold and ulimately dies. In addition, large amounts of oil can simply clog up their ability to fly. finally, seabirds depend on fish and aquatic animals for food, so if the oil kills their food source, they starve.
Oil spills can soak birds wings and the weight will make them unable to fly. Cleaning oil soaked birds is not easy and an already weaken bird may die from the trauma of cleaning. Birds naturally preen themselves (clean their feathers) and in the process will ingest crude oil. The weathered oil or tar balls can be particularly harmful. Oil spills can be destructive to the birds natural habitat.
Not all oil spills are the same. Many spills are small and may not affect coastal birds. However, the very large ones near coastal areas- Gulf War oil spill, Exxon-Valdez and the BP oil spill have had a very serious impact on the wildlife particularly birds and marine life.
The marine life is the food source of the coastal birds, so as the marine life is affected, there may be an indirect but long term affect on coastal bird populations.
I've included a few links. You can find a lot of good information on the impact of oil spills and the difficulties in cleaning an oil soaked bird by searching the internet.
Aquatic birds that are exposed to pollution and oil spills are affected (such as pelicans and seagulls) especially if they get coated in oil from an oil spill. Most underwater animals are also affected. The magnitude of the effect depends on they degree of exposure and their sensitivity to the pollutant. Some animals are rather resistant to some types of pollution and are not affected very much until the pollution reaches some significant level. Some get greater exposure by consuming lots of other slightly contaminated animals - thus getting a bigger dose.
Brown Pelicans, Loggerhead Turtles, Bobcats, The Sanderlings, Blue Crabs, Oysters, Shrimp, American Alligator, Dolphins, and Gulf Shrimp are all affected.
gulls, pelicans, roseate spoonbills, egrets, terns, blue herons, walruses, sea otters, sea lions and seals
Many animals such as ducks, fish, and amphibians were affected in the oil spill.
