However it is worth noting that 'unfair taxes' depends on the point of view-the British needed American taxes in order to help finance their wars in Europe, while the Colonists were viewing themselves more as "Americans" and opposed to "Englishmen." These feeling came to a boiling point during the violent demonstration known as the Boston Tea Party (16 December 1773), that helped the Colonists to understand their only remedy to the problem was independence.
