John Winthrop was the leader of a group of englishmen called Puritans. He set up Massachusets to practice a new religion. But three people named Anne Hutchinson, Thomas Hooker, and Roger Williams split from the colony because they disagreed with Winthrop's ideas for the church. Roger Williams was the founder of the Rhode Island colony. The clergyman founded Providence in 1635 after being exiled from Massachusetts Bay colony. He was banished for what they felt were radical religious and political ideas. He challenged Puritans to acknowledge their separation from the Church of England and said the King had no right to take Native American lands.

Thomas Hooker lead a group of Puritans out of the Massachusets Bay Colony to Connecticut in order to gain religious freedom and trading opportunities. There were 100 men and women and 130 cattle. Thomas Hooker ALSO founded Hartford and got his colony growing because of his religious freedom ideas.
