Germany was never colonized. For that you need a colonial power who invades the area and subdues the natives. Well, Germany developed in a totally different way.

Before the Roman Empire the people in Europe lived in many different tribes and villages. The entire territory of what is now know as Germany was divided into many small city kingdoms with a large number of Germanic languages and cultures.

One figure who is central to the rise of the German city-states was Charlemagne (a.k.a Karl de Grosse). After the fall of the Roman Empire all of Europe fell to what is called the Middleage. At this time there was great chaos and Charlemagne, under the blessing of the Roman Catholic Church , dominated all of the territory of what is now known and France and Germany.

Some of the small kingdoms in Central Europe later became quite large, like Bavaria and Prussia, and expanded covering a large portion of central Europe.

At that time France and Germany were basically one kingdom, though neither of the countries wants to admit it. This is why both France, through Napoleon, and Germany, though Hitler, tried hard to unite Europe under a single regime.

In the past due to the low population in Eruope Charlemagne was able to do just that, but both Napoleon and Hitler failed due to the added complexities risen by the inclusion of Russia, the UK and the US.

Among the European countries that established their own colonies in Africa were Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. While some countries (including France, Spain, and Portugal) had colonized parts of Africa as far back as the 1500s, the majority of the colonization by the European powers occurred in the mid-to late 1800s. To a certain extent, the Dutch were apart of this colonization as they formed a group of other Europeans who settled in what was South Africa. They were called Afrikaners.
