While "officially" Buddhism may not be a leading religion in many western countries it is among the quickest growing. Buddhist thought permeates much of western society - children at schools often start the day with a period of "mindfulness" derived from Buddhist practice, people often speak of the karmic value of certain activities, Zen koans are often written out as inspirational plaques. Vegan, vegetarian and anti animal cruelty groups are common.

As far as current schools of Buddhism influencing current thought, Buddhism is far less of a force in India now; it was a major force in China not very long ago. However it may well be that Buddhism had a large influence in India in several early periods, which can be said to have influenced the course of her history, so that Buddhism has had a huge effect on the India we now see -- and has probably had less of such effect in China. So it depends on whether you're talking about past or current influence.
