When you take the old one out note the possission the old one comes out. Also on most cars the only fit one way properly.
The spring end goes in the intake manifold
The spring goes towards the engine , and if the engine thermostat has a vent hole , the hole goes at the top
Drain the radiator. Remove the top radiator hose and water inlet. Remove the thermostat from under the inlet. Install the new thermostat, reinstall the inlet and hose, and fill the system with new freon.
follow the top radiator hose down to engine block. there will be a fitting there that you have to unbolt to get to thermostat. make sure to place new thermostat in housing the same direction the old one was facing.note whether gasket or o-ring went in front of or behind thermo. if gasket, it is best to coat it with permatex no. 2 gasket maker before installing. if o-ring simply install.

On my 93 the thermostat is behind the water pump. If you remove the waterpump you will see the thermostat.

Drain coolant into a clean container. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine block it connects to the housing for thermostat here. Remove two bolts and carefully pull up on the housing. install in the reverse. put new coolant.
A coolant leak on a 93 cavalier could be anyplace where coolant flows. Check all hoses, connections, the radiator, and heater core for any possible leak spots.
