Dropsy is common amongst any species of fish that are kept in bad water conditions. The best thing is to avoid your fish getting it because there is no known cure.
If you follow the basic rules of successfull fishkeeping your fish should do OK. The basic rules are. 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs to have a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs to have at least 50% of its water replaced every week. All fish need to be kept at the temperature their species requires. They should be fed morning and evening as much good quality tropical fish food as they can eat in 15 minutes. If you follow the above rules your fish should do OK. I can guarantee that if you miss out on any of the above your fish will constantly be getting sick and will not live a normal lifespan.

The dropsy is usually caused because the fishes immune system was unable to fight the primary infection, and it has caused organ damage, usually to their kidneys. Dropsy can also occur for no apparent reason in an older fish. As with humans sometimes as fish age their organs begin to fail, as such they contract dropsy.
