This color is almost always female. This red and black color in cats in on the X chromosomes. Since females have two X's, they can have red and black in their coats. The white in calico is a marking over the other two colors. The best way to say this is " tortoiseshell and white". Males (XY) can be calico only if they have a genetic abnormality such as XXY.

Are dilute calico cats rare?

No, calico cats are pretty common. It is very rare to see a male calico cat, especially one that is full-grown, because almost all male calicos have genetic defects that kill them as kittens. Because of this, adult male calicos are incredibly valuable and have sold for thousands of dollars or more.

What is the percentage of how rare a male calico cat is?

Calico cats are more likely to be?

Calico cats are almost always female. This occurs because the gene that determines color is located in the X chromosome and two X chromosome produce females.

What makes a cat calico?

Not necessarily. A calico cat is only female, due to genetics, while all tabby cats are males. A calico is typically white with orange and black patches in its pelt. Well that is not quite true. Most tabby cats are male and most calicos and tortoiseshells are females, but not all of them. They are very rare, but they do exist. Also, calicos of any gender must be orange, white, and black, or ginger, cream, and gray, in distinct patches.

What is the percentage of female to male calico cats?

Well, in our school, we did a survey of the whole school of the people who had cats and wether their female or male and it seemed that the female cat, produces more of the male gender then the female gender, and cat owners prefer male cats since their more outgoing and cuddly, while the female is more conservative and keeps to herself. So ,our result was 3/5 of the cat population is male, ironic huh, since the female cat is the only one that produces :) AHAHA

How long do calico cats live?

From what I understand calico cats are all female. There are no male calico cats.thats not completely true ..male calico cats are born very rarely about 1-3000 calico cat births..they are always sterile so they are not worth any money..Actually, a few male calico/tortoiseshell cats arefertile. They are more likely the result of mosaicism rather than an XXY chromosomal anomaly, which causes infertility. Whatever the cause, though, they still aren't particularly valuable, because neither a chromosomal anomaly or a developmental anomaly like mosaicism is a genetic trait that can be passed on to their offspring.

Do calico cats get along?

Calico cats are mostly female because of genetics. The term calico refers to a cat that is three colors, now it is possible for male cats to be calico, but it is a rare condition. The X chromosomes display the colors orange and black, and the white is in a totally separate gene. Because female cats have two x chromosomes (xx) they are able to display two colors along with white. now, it is more complicated than that, but that's that basics of it.. although male cats have an x and a y chromosome (xy) the event that male cats have two x chromosomes and a y chromosome (xxy) is very rare, and they are normally sterile. which means they cant breed. there is a similar condition in humans called Klinefelter's syndrome, or XXY Syndrome.
