Which is older - Judaism or Hinduism?

Followers of both Judaism and Hinduism will say that their religion is older, pointing to the fact that their religion contains a creation story and must therefore be as old as creation. Unfortunately, the age of a religious belief can not be estimated from the stories and legends associated with that belief, but from evidence independent of the scripture accounts.

One difficulty in comparing the ages of the two religions is that they both evolved over the centuries, so do you look for the earliest identifiable version of each religion, or do you look for evidence of the religion at a time when its beliefs and practices were much the same as they are today? What we can say, is that Judaism and Hinduism are both very ancient religions.

Even though Hinduism and Judaism have creation stories, neither religion believes that it was formed at the creation of the world (unlike Islam which does hold this belief). As it stands, Hinduism is likely older, but the dates of each religion's codification are still hazy in the present day.

Hinduism comes mainly as a result of the traditions of the Vedas finally being implemented across the Indian subcontinent, an event that roughly took place as early as 1700 B.C.E. or as late as 1100 B.C.E. This is not the first ancestor of Hinduism, but the moment where Hinduism began to become separates from the Vedas.

Judaism only became codified during the supposed events of Moses at Mount Sinai which occurred at around 1290 B.C.E., a number that sits in the middle of the Vedas time-frame. Scholars argue that Jewish Law was not actually codified for centuries more, making Judaism younger than Hinduism.
