In 1776, Massachuetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island were colonies, and later states. Vermont was an unclaimed strip of land. Maine was a part of Massachusetts. Vermont joined the nation as a state after th revolution and Maine remained a nonentity until 1820 when it was made into a state to balance out the entrance of slave state Missouri.
