President Lincoln was personally against slavery. His Emancipation Proclamation during the US Civil War intended to free slaves in the eleven Confederate states, however, it was not intended to free slaves in Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware, the so-called "border states". Slavery in the US was abolished by the 13th amendment of the US Constitution in December of 1865. This was approximately nine month after Lincoln was assassinated. At the time the US president was Democrat Andrew Johnson. Lincoln was not able to abolish slavery because the US Supreme Court had ruled in a defacto manner, in 1857, that slavery was protected under the Constitution. With that said, slavery could not be abolished unless an amendment to the Constitution was made, and in December of 1865, the amendment was passed.
