From a Christians standpoint:Probably most religions believe life is sacred; therefore there are universal laws regarding 'murder'; even 'kidnapping' life.

But what 'sacredness' means, may vary, -- depending on certain factors.

Really, everything God created is sacred; because he created it.

For example, animal life is sacred. But God permits the killing of animals for food. Likewise with 'human life'. This is sacred. But God permits capital punishment, the taking of life, thru means of the law (in a legal way). God himself will judge humans, and 'cut-off' all evildoers, states The Bible.

Even plant LIFE is sacred; because this is what God created to sustain other forms of life. Animal life and human life is sustained by the food from plants; also sustained by the oxygen producing factor of plantlife. Therefore while wanton destruction of the environment is wrong; it's certainly not wrong to chop down trees for lumber for housing. Yet there must be a way that mankind shows regard for God's creation, by allowing for re-planting.

AnswerA number of religions hold this belief, most particularly Jainism. Jain priests often sweep the path in front of them as they walk, for fear of treading on an ant or other small creature. Buddhism and Daoism are other examples of religions that teach that sentient beings should not be harmed.

Don't forget Hinnduism.

Jainism believes that all living things which include animals & insects are sacred. Their religious priests go to great lengths to avoid killing any kind of animal or insect even by mistake also.

As an example, the Jain Priests are supposed to keep their heads clean of hair (i.e. in simple words, shaving their head). Now instead of shaving their head's like other people do, they are actually supposed to 'pluck out' their hair from the head. As per tradition their tradition, each hair (or a small group of hair strands) are pulled out of their roots, till the head is clean of hair.

REASON: They want avoid the sin of killing any small insect (like flea), which is in their hair & accidently dies while shaving.

Similarly a particular sect of Jainism wear cloth masks, covering their mouth at all times.

LOGIC: That no small insect accidently dies while breathing...

Hence Jainism considers all living things, including animals as sacred.
