In Colonial America many groups of people were very intolerant of the religious beliefs of others. the middle colonies, however (especially Pennsylvania were tolerant of others. William Penn was a Quaker leader who came up with the 'Holy experiment' which was a colony were many different religions could coexist peacefully with each other. Quakers also believed that all were equal in the eyes of God and so they di not look down at any other religion or race. New York was also very tolerent because Catholic, Puritan, and Separatists lived there.
