"Colonialism" is a term that may be used as a starting point in explaining why the official languages in the countries of South America - and indeed all of Latin America - originated in Europe.

Specifically, the term refers to the setting up of colonies that interact dependently and subordinately to Another Country or entity. That interaction at its most extreme involves control over cultures, economies, polities and societies. An example may be seen in the development of Latin American countries by European explorers, missionaries and settlers. The critical decisions over how land was going to be used were made in European languages. So economic control had side-effects on the languages that emerged as dominant and that became official with participation, as sovereign or dependent entities, in the modern world.

In actuality, such a course of events was nothing new to the native populations of Latin America. For example, the militant expansion of the Aztec and Inca empires that took place just before European arrivals yielded similar side-effects in terms of dominant culture, economics, language, politics and society.
