1.sit in car, shut door.Turn on ignition till dash lights come on but don't start engine! 2. Push lever to lock door, pull lever to unlock. Push lever to lock door, pull lever to unlock. Push lever to lock door, pull lever to unlock. 3.Turn off ignition 4. Repeat 2 but with ignition OFF 5. Turn on ignition - should hear a beep 6. Lock door again as in 2 BUT ONLY ONCE - final beep should be heard 7. Done!

There is a lever above the parking break that you pull by hand.
Turning the steering wheel left to right rapidly while turning the key in the ignition should free up the ignition switch. If this does not rectify the problem it could be with the lever lockout or the key itself.

headlights and the brake switch are "hot" (always have power going to them) they are on there own powersource, the ignition is also on its own powersource, when you turn the key it pushes a lever forward contacting the switch inside the column, your question is vague,what don't you have ? cranking, power to ignition, troubleshooting is the key to fixing any vehicle... its a series of tests leading to fixing the problem
try jiggling the steering wheel and the shift lever simultaneously, some pressure on the steering wheel may be required. the ignition may be worn out also.
The 1992 GMC parking brake release lever can be found on the bottom of the dashboard. Pulling the lever towards the passenger compartment will release the parking brake.

According to other sources I have found in researching this question on the web .. the problem is most likely the Shift Lever Assembly. From the MSN Site:"An occasional problem with this vehicle is the Shift Lever Assembly (Transmission Shift Lock Actuator), automatic transmission only, and the Ignition Lock Cylinder Assembly. A failure of the Shift Lever Assembly will prevent the Ignition Key from being removed from the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Failure of the Ignition Lock Cylinder may prevent he vehicle from starting. The cost to repair the Shift Lever Assembly is estimated at $73.00 for parts and $71.50 for labor. The cost to repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder is estimated tat $21.54 for parts and $39.00 for labor.
