The Harlem renaissance was an arts explosion that occurred in the 1920's. Renaissance means rebirth, which meant a new styles of writing, music etc. This rebirth occurred in Harlem part of New York City. Many cities in the US had renaissances but none was as important or more influential than the Harlem Renaissance because of the contributors such as Langston Hughes, Duke Ellington etc. This was an African American cultural explosion!
