His son, Edward VI. He was a boy king, being crowned at the age of only 9 on 20th February 1547 after the death of his father. Because he was so young, the nation was headed by a Regency Council until Edward reached maturity, which was initially headed by his uncle Edward Seymour (Duke of Somerset), and then by John Dudley (Earl of Warwick), and the Duke of Northumberland. He was the first English monarch to be born and brought up as a Protestant.
Edward's main achievements were to have founded some grammar schools, which still exist today. However, his reign was marked by social and economic unrest, which included anti-Government riots in 1549 and an expensive war with Scotland that ended inconclusively. Edward took an unpleasant delight in the torture and execution of some of the leaders of the riots, which even making allowance for the fact that he was only a child, don't suggest that he was a terribly nice boy. During Edward's time on the throne, Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Cranmer published the Book of Common Prayer, still used by the Anglican Church today.
He died on 6th July 1553 at the age of just 15, of tuberculosis, and is buried in Henry VII Lady Chapel in Westminster Abbey. Shortly before he died he named his cousin, Lady Jane Grey, as his successor to the throne, excluding his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth Tudor- Mary Tudor was a Catholic, and Edward wanted his successor to be a Protestant like he was. Elizabeth was protestant too, but the Duke of Northumberland persuaded the dying boy-king to nominate Lady Jane as the Duke was also related to her, and he harboured political ambitions of his own in securing Jane as the new Queen. However, Lady Jane's legitimate right to the throne was disputed- she reigned for only 9 days, was never crowned, and was ultimately deposed and executed by the ruthless Mary Tudor, who went on to reign tyrannically for a decade and earn the nickname 'Bloody Mary' because of her persecution of the Protestants.
