The Gallo-Roman and Hispano-Roman aristocracy became part of the ruling class of the Frankish Kingdom in France, Switzerland and southern Germany and the Visigoth Kingdom in Spain and Portugal. The Franks and the Visigoths needed the support of such aristocracy to rule their newly conquered lands to and ensure stability and control over the populace. Moreover, the courts of the kings needed the educated and literate Latin-speaking aristocracy (the invaders were illiterate) to provide court bureaucrats and legal experts. The new kingdoms issued codes of law which were a mixture of the customary law of the conquerors and Roman law which were compiled by the Latin-speakers. This was a factor in the kings of these two peoples converting to Catholicism, the religion of these aristocracies and the masses. King Clovis of the Franks converted from paganism in 496. King Reccared of the Visigoths converted from Arian Christianity in 589.

In Italy, King Theodoric the Great, the king of the Ostrogoths who invaded Italy, limited himself to ruling his people, whom he settled in an area of northern Italy. He felt the rest of Italy alone and allowed the Italians to govern themselves. The next invaders of Italy, the Lombards, initially appropriated farmland and decimated the rural aristocrats. Later, however, the Lombard kings relied on the educated Italians for their court bureaucracy.

We do not have much information about what happened to the Afro-Roman aristocracy when the Vandals invaded north-western Africa. However, it must have survived because when the Vandals were expelled from this area, there were still educated Romans.

When did the Western Roman Empire fall?

The most commonly used date is 476, but other dates are also used. Some historians just say 5th century, or the second half of the 5th century. Clearly it was a long, drawn out affair. The East Roman Empire survived until 1453. The name we use for it is the Byzantine Empire, but that name was never used at the time, and they were nearly always called the Roman Empire during the Middle Ages.
