You need to contact as many people in management or Human Resources in the companies where you wish to get a job as soon as possible. Before you contact them, get a job application from the company and fill it out at home (if they will let you bring it home with you). Before you bring it back, make sure that the person who will be conducting the interview will be available to speak with you. Also, bring a copy of your resume, along with letter(s) of recommendation.

If the person who does the interviewing is not available when you get there, do not just leave your application, resume, and letter of recommendation with the receptionist. Tell her you will come back at a later time, and bring them with you again when you return. The one who does the hiring wants to be able to put a face with the application.

And be sure to dress appropriately for the interview, but don't over do it. If you are a woman, don't wear as much make-up as you would for a New Year's Eve party, be a little more conservative. If you are a man with no beard or moustache, be sure you are clean shaven; if you do have facial hair, make sure it is neatly trimmed.

During the interview, always look the interviewer in the eye while talking to them instead of looking at the floor, around the room, etc. This shows a sincere interest the job, and shows respect for the person interviewing you. And one more very important thing, unless the company has an add in the paper instructing you to do so, do not just fax, email, or snail mail your resume to the company.

When I was still working (office management), I never hired anyone who didn't care enough about the job to bother to come in person. And, once you have been in the job field for a while, it will not look good to have a lot of previous employers on your application; this indicates a lack of responsibility. I always called them "job hoppers" and never hired them. Also, never call the company on the phone and ask them if they are hiring; this is an indication of laziness to many employers.

If you are really sincere about finding a job, you need to spend the same number of hours every day looking for a job as you would working at a job you already have, so be prepared to "hit the pavement". And you do not have to contact only the companies who have advertised an open position. Actually, the best jobs I had were ones which had no position advertised - I made what I call "cold calls".

Make a list of the companies you would like to work for, then go there in person and apply for a position with them. That way, when a postion does become available, they will already have your resume and application on file. If, after a few weeks, you still have not had any response or calls from any of the places where you have applied, give them a courtesy call to let them know you are still interested in working for their company. This will let them know you are sincere about wanting to work; just don't over do it an make a pest of yourself or be pushy.

After you get an interview with the one who does the hiring, mail them a hand written note, thanking them for their time and the interview. This will serve several purposes: 1) It will let them know you are professional. 2) It will let them know you are serious about wanting to work there. 3) It will also be a bit of a reminder, keeping your name in the forefront.
