The Renaissance centered around the reuse and rebirth of art and literature that focused on non-Christian themes. People started painting scenes from Greek mythology and so on. Artists in the Renaissance included Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael (if you're a Ninja Turtles fan, they're all named for Renaissance artists). The Renaissance also included literature. Some Renaissance writers were Dante (the Divine Comedy, which was important because it was written in Italian not Latin) and Shakespeare (later Renaissance in England).

Florence is more typically known as the center of Renaissance art. It was in Florence that the rapidly-expanding wool trade strengthened the city's economy to such a degree that a whole new class of nobility, headed by the Medici family, was born. This new class of nobility had the money and leisure to sponsor some of the greatest works of Renaissance art. Without Florence, the Italian Renaissance would have been extremely different, and perhaps never happened at all.

Before the Renaissance, most art was created anonymously to glorify God. Artists did not do self-portraits or sign their work, so they remained unknown. During the Renaissance, some artists even placed themselves in the work they created. They began to sign their works and create self-portraits. The content of the art changed from mostly religious figures to everyday figures, such as marines, wives, children, scholars, or musicians.
