The Entente Powers, led by France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and later Italy (from 1915) and the United States (from 1917), defeated the Central Powers, led by the Austro-Hungarian, German, and Ottoman Empires. Russia withdrew from the war after the revolution in 1917
The US declared war on Germany in mid-1917; by the start of 1918, US units were engaged in France fighting the Germans, coordinated to French and British units. They remained there until war's end, assisting in several major victories.
American troops fought primarily in France against the Germans. Some forces were deployed in Italy against the Austrians, and, later, German reinforcements. Outside of the Navy, very few Americans saw service in any other theaters of war during WWI.

The US did fight in World War 1, although not from the beginning. Same for World War 2. When both world wars began, they were seen as European squabbles, and there was a strong feeling that the US should make every effort to stay out of them.
