The Thirty Years' War began in Bohemia, where a group of Protestants took two Catholic officials and threw them from a window. This was known as The Defenestration. The officials survived the fall after landing in a pile of horse manure, and the Catholics declared that their survival was a miracle of the Virgin Mary.
After the Thirty Years' War, Europe witnessed significant changes. The Peace of Westphalia, signed in 1648, marked the end of the war and established the principles of state sovereignty and religious toleration. The war caused widespread devastation and loss of life, leading to economic hardships and depopulation in many regions. It also shifted the balance of power in Europe, weakening the Holy Roman Empire and strengthening the nation-states of France and Sweden.
The Thirty Years' War was fought, mainly in Central Europe, from 1618-1648. The Habsburg monarchy tried to gain hegemony in Europe and impose Roman Catholicism on the Protestant states. It developed into a much wider European conflict.
