Several "fringe candidates" run in each election, and a few in each and every election, without success. About the most credible historic candidate was William Jennings Bryan, a minister and author who ran numerous times, came close, but never won. Gerald R. Ford, the 38th American President (who replaced Nixon when he resigned) was a Congressman who became Vice President after Spiro Agnew was forced to resign in a scandal. Nixon had his own scandal (Watergate) going on, and resigned in 1974. So he was never elected President or Vice President. Ford ran for President in 1976, but lost to Jimmy Carter; many people believed that Ford lost because he pardoned Nixon, and suspected that they had planned it together. (They hadn't; Ford believed the whole Watergate scandal was just going to further hurt the country, if Nixon were impeached or prosecuted, and he figured it was best to just move on. Nixon was out of office, and that was the main objective.)
