The Romans overthrew the last Roman king in a rebellion in 509 BC because he was a tyrant. The Romans decided to do away with the monarchy and establish a republic to prevent the return of tyranny. Monarchy became associated with tyranny. The Roman Republic was headed by two annually elected consuls. Having two men in charge meant that they could counterbalance each other. The short term of office ensured that no one could concentrate power in his hands and thus become a tyrant. The Romans also swore that they would not let anyone try to become a king. Trying to become a king was the worst possible accusation. In the 5th century BC one man was killed and his house destroyed and in the 4th century BC another man was executed because of accusations of trying to become a king.

The Roman Republic lasted for 482 years (509-27 BC). It was replaced by rule by emperors.

Nobody held office for one yea to prevent abuses of power r in Rome. Lucius Cornellius Sulla was appointed dictator of an undetermined period of time with the task of reforming the Roman constitution. The term dictator had a different meaning in ancient Rome. The dictator was an extraordinary officer of state who was usually appointed in times of emergency and his term of office was six months. This was the first time a dictator was appointed for more than six months. . Sulla resigned after one year. Sulla was a perpetrator of abuse of power, rather than a defender from it. His appointment came after he won a civil war against Gaius Marius. He persecuted his opponents and had thousands of men executed or murdered. His actions gave the Dictatorship a bad name
