Who invented the Internet how was it first used?

it was invented by the military as a means of communication. dunno the guy's name. how he came up with it was most likely that he needed to connect computers over a long distance. Yes, the government along with universities developed the internet as a way for scientists to share ideas. Originally it was just email and FTP sites as well as the Usanet where scientists could question and answer each other. Eventually, I think it was someone at the university of Illinois supercomputing center that came up with HTML documents or what we know of now as the web. The idea there was that you could have a document that could be seen from other computers by using a browser and you could display information in HTML format. That part of the internet is what became comercialized and is what most people think of as the internet. Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet. Here is his website: w3.org

The internet is a vast network connecting computers from all over the world to enable information sharing. Memos written by J.C.R. Licklider of MIT in August 1962 are the first recorded social interactions enabled by computer networking (Leiner et al., 2009). In October 1962, Licklider became the first head of the computer research program at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the United States. Licklider convinced others at DARPA of the importance of his concept of a "galactic network". The concept he envisioned was very much like the internet we know today, computers interconnected globally to allow quick and easy access to information and programs (Leiner et al., 2009).

In 1965 MIT researcher, Lawrence G. Roberts, working with his colleague, Thomas Merrill, connected a computer in Massachusetts to a computer in California using a low speed telephone connection. This was the first wide area network connection ever used, and though it proved to work well, it was apparent that the circuit switched telephone system was not adequate for the job (Leiner et al., 2009). Leonard Kleinrock of MIT had published a paper in 1961, and a book in 1964, suggesting that using packets for computer networking would be more feasible than using circuits. It was obvious from Roberts and Merrill's network experiment that Kleinrock was indeed correct (Leiner et al., 2009).

In 1966 Roberts went to work at DARPA, publishing a paper for a computer networking concept called "ARPANET" in 1967 (Leiner et al., 2009). At the conference Roberts presented his paper at, he was made aware of work being conducted at the Research and Development (RAND) Corporation in the United States and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the United Kingdom. It seems that all three groups had been working on parallel concepts without knowing it (Leiner et al., 2009).

After much work refining ARPANET the first host computer, in the Network Measurement Centre at UCLA, was connected in September 1969 (Leiner et al., 2009). One month later a second host computer, at the Stanford Research Institute, was connected and the first host to host messages were sent. ARPANET eventually became the internet, gaining a place in the public arena in the 1990's. There have been a vast array of protocols added, host computers connected, and new programs invented. The internet has become the main means of communication in western society today.

Internet was not invented by any single person but it was a group of ideas put forward. The main reason as to what lead to the development of the internet was the US Military which created the ARPA or Advanced Research projects Agency in 1957 to invent new technologies that could help the US Military. Later in 1960, ARPa and MIT joined together on sharing information. Then in 1961, Larry Roberts from MIT designed ARPANET by which he could link computers over long distances. The process gradually let to joining of other universities such as UCLA and Stanford in the network nodes. ARPANET became so popular that by 1973 it had a node in London.

1970's was the era of data transmission as new technologie such as TCP/IP were invented which led to the transmission of data easier and later UNIX was also created. TCP/Ip was the first reference to the internet. In 1985, The first ever domain went online successfully by the name symbolics.com. In 1990, Tim Berners Lee started working on a technology called CERN where he developed the idea of linking docs with hyperlinks. For the first time, he made the internet an even powerful place by developing the www or world wide web and this changed the world entirely and made information sharing and data transmission easier than even mankind could ever think of.

Although Vinton Cerf started internet researching, no one can be named as internet inventor because internet evolved through the work of many people. It's primary use was for communication.
