Dr. Joseph Warren (1741-1775) was a Massachusetts physician, politician, and soldier. He is best known as the man who dispatched Paul Revere on that famous ride, as the author of the Suffolk Resolves, and as a major general at the Battle of Bunker Hill, where he was killed in action. Other important Warren physicians, all closely related to Joseph Warren, were John Warren (1753-1815 brother to Joseph), founder of Harvard Medical School, and John Collins Warren (1778-1856 nephew of Joseph), a founder of the Massachusetts General Hospital and one of the first physicians to use general anesthesia during surgery. The Warrens comprise a unique American medical dynasty in the New England area, currently represented in the seventh generation by Dr. H. Shaw Warren of the Massachusetts General Hospital staff.

Dr. Joseph Warren (1741-1775), was among other things elected to the Revolutionary era Massachusetts, Provincial Congress, appointed a major general, and perished at the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. Well known in his time for public pronouncements defining what it is to be an American and the responsibilities of its citizens, he was revered as a martyr to embryonic American Liberty. Modern observers who learn about him are attracted to his words and the drama of his life story.

No, he is not related to Dr. Joseph Warren of Bunker Hill. William Whipple Warren is either a lineal or collateral descendent of Richard Warren of the Mayflower Line. Dr. Joseph Warren is of the Dr. (Gen.) Joseph Warren/Peter, the Mariner line. The William Whipple Warren Family claim to be of lineal descendent but this is still up in the air. Historians are leaning towards them being of collateral descent now.
