Franz Kafka, born on the 3rd July 1883 in Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (what is now known as the Czech Republic), was an author of novels and short stories.
He was working for an insurance company when he began to write short stories in his spare time. Later he complained that he did not have enough spare time to devote to what he felt was his calling, which was writing stories. His (at the time) unique writing style, which included psychological brutality, archetypes of alienation, parent-child conflict, mysticism and labyrinths of bureaucracy, was influenced by his family life.
