In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a division of the US Department of Labor, is regulates employee health and safety in workplaces, except for employees of about half the states and for most federal employees. As a practical matter, however, the requirements of the Joint Commission (formerly called the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation) has safety and sanitation requirements that are more specific and more stringent than those of OSHA, so this is the actual driving force. The Joint Commission's rules apply to all hospitals in the US, because a hospital accredited by the Joint Commission is deemed to meet the Medicare Conditions of Participation.
