North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Its purpose originally was to counteract the Soviet Union. According to the NATO Charter, an attack on one member was an attack on all, thereby protecting all members from attack by the Soviet Union.

Currently, the purpose of NATO is debatable...some argue that since the USSR is gone, the original purpose of NATO is over. Others argue that with threats in the world, the treaty is still vital. NATO recognized the 9/11 attacks and has supported the U.S. in Afghanistan (but not Iraq).

The alliance provides for sharing of technologies and of intelligence.

NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949.

The purpose of NATO is to provide a system of collective defense where if one member is attacked by an external party, all members involved will aid in defending.

NATO is a military alliance of several European nations with Canada, Turkey, and the US that was formed shortly after World War 2. Its purpose was to continue the successful wartime alliance of those countries and to increase their ability to oppose communist expansion being managed by the Soviet Union.

Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union and abandonment of the opposing Warsaw Pact alliance, the purpose of NATO has been changed to a broader, peacekeeping function.

NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, so it means it was established when they signed a treaty. The purpose of NATO was to keep North American and European countries protected from attacks, primarily by the USSR. Whoever came and attacked these countires they would revenge back.
