The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria was established in April 10, 1846 through the missionary work led by Hope Masterton Waddell (an Irish minister who then served under the Scottish Missionary Soceity in Jamaica), Andrew Chisholm (Carpenter), Edward Miller (a freed slave, who had been a doctor's assistant) and George Buchanan Waddell, who arrived in Calabar to begin their mission work.

The Scottish Missionary Society (SMS), which was instituted in February 29, 1796, had begun work in Jamaica in 1800 and had in the course of the years established mission stations in several parts of the island. Following the emacipation of the slaves in the island in 1838 they decided to raise 'freedom offering' in order to take the gospel to Africa.

The United Secession Synod which was held at Glasgow in May 1844 resolved to sponsor the mission to Calabar, Nigeria and appointed Hope Masterdon Waddell to lead the team.ype your answer here...
