Pollsters do occasionally take polls to ask that question. A large number of people know only the presidents from their own lifetime so the most recent presidents win in these polls. Democrats name Obama or Clinton. Republicans pick Reagan. Moving back into history a bit, the names that consistently vie for top place among all American presidents are Washington, Lincoln , F. D.R, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry Truman and J.F.K. Interestingly, polls taken among history professors and other experts in the field usually have vastly differing views of the top ten presidents, but they are curiously alike in naming the worst candidates, and the name at the bottom of most lists is James Buchanan.
This is actually a hard question to answer, because some presidents are not very popular during their term in office (due, sometimes, to circumstances beyond their control), but years later, people re-evaluate what that president did and come to a different conclusion about him. A good example is Abraham Lincoln, who was extremely controversial during his lifetime, but is now regarded by most historians as one of the greatest presidents. It should also be noted that personal popularity does not necessarily mean the president's policies are popular: there are many people who personally like Barack Obama, for example, but do not always agree with his policies; the same was true about his predecessor, George W. Bush, a very controversial figure whose decisions were often the subject of much contentious debate, but a man who had considerable personal popularity.
As for which presidents have been very popular in their lifetime, George Washington was widely admired; so was Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was also extremely popular with large numbers of Americans, as were Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.
This question has been debated for over a century. Some of the best presidents ever include Theodore Roosevelt, Frankin Delano Roosevelt, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. They all have great accomplishments, and it is up to you to decide for yourself who is truly the best president ever. I think Frankin D. Roosevelt was the best president ever, leading the country through the Great Depression and getting elected four times.
At the time, or now?
George Washington is a strong contender either way, being the only president ever elected unanimously by the Electoral College.
"Popular at the time, less so now": Nixon, who was elected in 1972 with 520 electoral votes comparared to his competitors combined total of 18.
Reagan (still fairly popular) did even better in 1984: 525 to Walter Mondale's 13.
Franklin Roosevelt scored a 523 to 8 victory against Alf Landon in 1936.
Finally, in 1820, James Monroe (who?) got either 215 or 218 compared to John Quincy Adams' single electoral vote. The elector who voted for Adams claimed to have done so because he felt that Washington should remain the only president ever elected unanimously by the electoral college, and he knew his vote would not affect the practical result anyway.
On the "popular now, not so much then" side, we have Jefferson, who actually tied with Aaron Burr in the 1800 electoral college results, and Lincoln, who despite winning in 1964 by a vote of 212 to 21, was decidedly unpopular in certain portions of the country.
"Not really popular then OR now": John Quincy Adams, who lost the electoral vote in 1824 to Andrew Jackson, but became president anyway since the rules required a majority, and Jackson only had a plurality. The election was therefore decided by the House of Representatives and Henry Clay, the Speaker of the House (and who detested Jackson), threw his support behind Adams.
John F. Kennedy was an incredibly popular president both for his youth and his policies. He shot to martyr stature when he was gunned down during a parade in Texas. Another incredibly popular president was Theodore Roosevelt, an avid outdoors man and nature enthusiast.
