What is Islam?: The name of the religion is Islam, which comes from an Arabic root word meaning "peace" and "submission." Islam teaches that one can only find peace in one's life by submitting to Almighty God (Allah) in heart, soul and deed. The same Arabic root word gives us "Salaam alaykum," ("Peace be with you"), the universal Muslim greeting.

Who is a Muslim?: A person who believes in and consciously follows Islam is called a Muslim, also from the same root word. So, the religion is called "Islam," and a person who believes in and follows it is a "Muslim." * What is the difference between Muslim, Moslem and Islamic?

How Many and Where?: Islam is a major world religion, with over 1 billion followers worldwide (1/5 of the world population). It is considered one of the Abrahamic, monotheistic faiths, along with Judaism and Christianity. Although usually associated with the Arabs of the Middle East, less than 10% of Muslims are in fact Arab. Muslims are found all over the world, of every nation, color and race. * Muslim population of the world

Who is Allah?: Allah is the proper name for Almighty God, and is often translated merely as "God." Allah has other names that are used to describe His characteristics: the Creator, the Sustainer, the Merciful, the Compassionate, etc. Muslims believe that since Allah alone is the Creator, it is He alone that deserves our devout love and worship. Islam holds to a strict monotheism. Any worship and prayers directed at saints, prophets, other human beings or nature is considered idolatry. * More about the nature of God * "Names" of Allah

What do Muslims believe about God, prophets, the afterlife, etc.?: The basic beliefs of Muslims fall into six main categories, which are known as the "Articles of Faith": * Faith in the unity of God * Faith in angels * Faith in prophets * Faith in books of revelation * Faith in an afterlife * Faith in destiny/divine decree

The "five pillars" of Islam: In Islam, faith and good works go hand-in-hand. A mere verbal declaration of faith is not enough, for belief in Allah makes obedience to Him a duty. The Muslim concept of worship is very broad. Muslims consider everything they do in life to be an act of worship, if it is done according to Allah's guidance. There are also five formal acts of worship which help strengthen a Muslim's faith and obedience. They are often called the "Five Pillars of Islam." * Testimony of faith (Kalima) * Prayer (Salat) * Almsgiving (Zakat) * Fasting (Sawm) * Pilgrimage (Hajj)

Daily life as a Muslim: While often seen as a radical or extreme religion, Muslims consider Islam to be the middle road. Muslims do not live life with complete disregard for God or religious matters, but nor do they neglect the world to devote themselves solely to worship and prayer. Muslims strike a balance by fulfilling the obligations of and enjoying this life, while always mindful of their duties to Allah and to others. * Morals and manners * Business ethics * Modesty in dress and behavior * Dietary rules * Marriage * Care of children and elderly * Racism and prejudice * Relations with non-Muslims

____________________________________________________________________

The answer above is historically inaccurate and is not objective and need be revised for the following:

  1. God (Allah in Arabic) founded Islam in its universal sense since start of universe creation. Refer to question below. Islam means submission to God. Islam per God Torah revelation to prophet Moses is called Judaism. Islam per The Bible revelation to Jesus is called Christianity. Islam per God revelation of Quran to prophet Muhammad is called the same name Islam.
  2. Prophet Muhammad was born in year 570 AD and Quran God revelation to him through the Angel Gabriel was in year 610 AD. this means prophet Muhammad starting call for Islam while at age 40 not 45 as above.
  3. Prophet didn't see waraqa ibn Nufal until the wedding of prophet Muhammad to his first wife Khadija and not when he was a child. Prophet Muhammad married Khadija before being prophet. On the first time he met with the angel Gabriel when received first verses of Quran while in mount cave (called Hiraa) he was so scared and confused and returned back home. Then his wife Khadija called her cousin Waraqa Ibn Nofal. When prophet happened he told him that you will be the God prophet predicted with in our holy books and if I am still alive I will be the first one to follow you but Waraqa died shortly after.
  4. Quran included lots of scientific and historic miracles that never known in neither Christianity nor in Judaism and which persuaded many unbelievers to convert to Islam up to this moment.
  5. It was known historically that when prophet Muhammad (before first revelation of Quran to him and before being prophet) was accompanying a trade mission from Mecca to the currently know area of Syria and Lebanon, he passed by one of the Christian priests who noticed that he was always shaded by a cloud and when met with him the priest told his companions that Muhammad will be the prophet of this era.
  6. If Islam is a Judo Christian religion why Quran revealed the deviations in Christianity and Judaism beliefs and why at that time both Jews and Christians denied the Quran and didn't convert to Islam. Refer to question below on why Quran was revealed.

Prophet. The Arabic word is nabi. Muhammed ibn Abdullah is generally identified as the prophet of Islam, but he preferred the term rasul, messenger. A messenger "ranks" a prophet since while the latter only enjoys some inspiration from God, a messenger is reciting God's actual words.

Islam means submission to Allah (or God in English and same God worshiped in Judaism and Christianity). Hence Islam in its broader sense is God religion since start of universe creation and creation of mankind. All God creatures are created on Islam to God. Accordingly, all God prophet are prophets of Islam; including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Ismael, Jacob, Joseph, Solomon, David, ..., Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all). However, Prophet of Islam per Quran God revelation to him through the angel Gabriel is prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Prophet Muhammad is the last and final God Prophet.
