The AR-15 was a further development from scaling down the AR-10 rifle. Eugene Stoner designed the AR-10, but L. James Sullivan was primarily responsible for the development of the AR-15 from the AR-10.
Eugene Stoner invented the rifle in 1957 in Los Angeles, California. The M16 (AR-15) back then, was sent for testing in South Vietnam in 1961 as a "jungle warfare" rifle. Spraying bullets, rather than long range accurate firing. More were sent in 1962. By 1963, M16s became general issue to US forces in Vietnam.

The standard assault rifle for the US Armed Forces is the M16, the Marines first created the M16A4 the newest version of the M16, before 2011 the US Army were using the M16A3 but now they are adapting the M16A4. Although the M4A1 carbine is being used more by the US military now then the M16. In about 10 years the M4 is to be replaced.
