American businessmen who wanted (no, demanded) that the Bayonet Constitution remain in place, that Asians and non-land owning Polynesians were denied the vote, and that the power of the Monarchy would be ceremonial and without power. The Missionary Party backed by their para-military Hawaiian Rifles surrounded the Ilokali Palace and the State Department's on site Mininster requested and received support from the embarked Marines and Naval Landing arty to "prevent the loss of American lives and property". He was an active participant, not as the US envoy but as a major player in Imperialism at the time.

The US Government did not overthrow the Monarchy. But, Americans did.

Hawaii's Monarchy was overthrown by businessmen who called themselves the Committee of Safety whose Chairman was an American citizen named Henry Ernest Cooper, Sr., an Indiana born lawyer. The power behind the Committee of Safety was Lorrin Thurston, the Publisher of the Pacific Commercial Advertiser (present day Honolulu Advertiser) and the grandson of two of the early Hawaiian missionaries. Thurston was not a member of the Committee, but was certainly the de facto head of the plot. The twelve other members included a German National who was a citizen of the Kingdom of Hawaii, a Scottish National, a Tasmanian born naturalized Hawaiian, two Americans who had been born in Hawaii, four Americans who had become Citizens of the Kingdom and three other American businessmen.

The US Minister to Hawaii, John Leavitt Stevens had been appointed Minister to Paraguay by Benjamin Harrison as a reward for his efforts in getting Harrison elected and had become a career diplomat serving as Minister also to Uruguay, Sweden and Norway was the other plot leader. Stevens, a former preacher turned newspaper publisher, turned Republican Party organiser was responsible for getting the Marines and Sailors involved in the interest of protecting American lives and property.

The coup d'etat worked because Queen Liliuokolani was convinced the US Military was there to support the Paramilitary Honolulu Rifles whose loyalty was to the Missionary Party who had the palace surrounded.

The United States did not overthrow the Monarchy. Big business and the Missionary Party, which later became the Reform Party did.
