no one really knows who started it although the main suspect is a dutch man called van der lubbe who was found in the building during the fire and was seen inside just before the fire broke. It is more likely that he was placed there by the Nazis though.

Mr Hitler, started the fire sending out his bodyguards, the SS. A lot of Nazi's were killed. This was because Hitler wanted to take power of the country. He knew a lot of Nazi's would disagree with the law he gives so he wanted them all killed.

The communists were too blame for the Reichstag fire because a young communist, Marinus van der Lubbe, was found on the site. Hitler then used this as an excuse to get communism banned and not able to take part in elections. Some historians say the Nazis started the fire: however, no one knows for sure.

How did the Reichstag fire give Hitler more power?

The Reichstag fire took place during an election campaign. The Nazis blamed the Communists for the fire and immediately banned them from taking part in the election. Hitler used the Reichstag fire to create a panic that made it easy for him to extend rule by decree. The elections took place a week later (5 March 1933) and Hitler soon got legislation passed allowing him unlimited rule by decree.
