In the 1930s, Russia was under Josef Stalin. Russia had dropped out of World War I because of the Russian Revolution. Stalin had made a deal with Hitler in Germany to split Poland between them.

In the 1930s, Benito Mussolini took power in Italy. Italy was late to forming a nation and did not have colonies as many other European countries. So Mussolini chose to go to war with Ethiopia to take that as a colony. Ethiopia went to the League of Nations to ask for help but was ignored.

Japan was not happy that Commodore Perry had forced Japan to trade with the West. Japan also resented the United States under Teddy Roosevelt stopped the war with Russia. So Japan wanted to control the Pacific. Japan invaded China, Indochina, and eventually attacked the United States in 1941. The Emperor was Hichinomiya Hirohito. The general of the army was Hideki Tōjō.

Spain was a monarchy under
King Alfonso XIII but in the 1930s was overthrown by Manuel Azaña. The king fled the country. Land reform was needed. The republican-Socialist coalition fought with the workers and 40 workers wee killed and 200 wounded. Eventually Gen. Francisco Franco gained control and was aided by Adolph Hitler and Benito Mussolini.
