Many people in the North, and even some in the South believed that slavery was inhuman and a sin against God.
President Abraham Lincoln, did not plan or want to free the slaves in the beginning of his Administration.
It was his election promise, "Not to allow slavery in anymore territories or new states that would be added to the Union."
After a couple of years of the American Civil War, Lincoln realized that he had no choice but to try to bring slavery to an end, and try to get the nation back together as a united one again.
