James Scullin was an Australian Labor Politician, and the thirteenth Prime Minister of Australia (but the ninth different Prime Minister). Australia's first Catholic Prime Minister, he served from 12 October 1929 to 19 December 1931.
As Prime Minister, he successfully brought Australia through the Great Depression. In order to do this, he suspended compulsory military training, raised tariffs on imports, abandoned the gold standard, increased social service payments and reduced assisted Immigration. He pushed for farmers to grow more wheat in order to increase exports.
